If we are going to expect our children to be open and honest with us from childhood and into young adult life, we need to be able to be open and honest with them, confessing when we hurt them and asking forgiveness. We need to be sensitive enough and discerning enough to also see when they have been hurt and their spirits may have been bruised or crushed. The greater the damage that has been done, the more patient we need to be in guiding them to healing.

Open communication with our child’s heart is important for all aspects of parenting, most meaningfully, for the sharing of love and fellowship with each other. Without this bond, discipline is just punishment, conversation is just talking at each other, and a family is just another group of people. With that bond, however, everything changes. It compensates for mistakes, changes minds and hearts, and focuses the future of each family member on the target of living God’s purpose for their lives. It is what makes a family a family for holidays and other gatherings for years to come.
